Senior move managers

Move managers plan and run the whole transition, from floor plans and sorting to packing, the move itself and setting up the new home. In an apartment building that can also mean working with the managing agent on elevator time and any paperwork the building asks movers for. Ask whether they are insured and whether they sell belongings themselves or refer that out.

Estate sale and liquidation companies

Estate sale companies price and sell household contents, usually for a commission. If you live in a co-op or condo, ask the managing agent whether the house rules allow a sale inside the building before you book one. Ask about the commission, minimum sale size, who handles unsold items and how quickly you are paid.

Donation centers

Call ahead for large furniture. Most charities will not take items with stains, tears or recalls, and none of the ones below take mattresses.

  • Housing Works Thrift Shops

    Drop off clothing, housewares, books, art, lighting and furniture during store hours; call ahead for furniture, since some shops do not take it. Furniture pickup is available for five or more pieces for a small fee. No electronics, appliances or mattresses.

  • Goodwill NY/NJ

    Clothing, shoes, accessories, luggage and household goods at stores and staffed donation centers. Home pickup is booked through ReSupply from the donation page.

  • The Salvation Army, Greater New York

    Free pickup of unbroken furniture, clothing, working appliances and household goods, scheduled online by ZIP code.

City, county and state aging services

Free, public programs. These are good first calls for questions about in-home help, benefits and Medicare.

    The city agency for older New Yorkers: older adult centers, meals, caregiver support, elder abuse prevention and employment help.

  • HIICAP Medicare counseling

    Free, confidential counseling on Medicare, Medigap, drug plans, EPIC and the Medicare Savings Program. In New York City, HIICAP is also reached through 212-AGING-NYC.

  • Suffolk County Office for the Aging

    For moves to Suffolk County: nutrition programs, in-home care coordination, caregiver support and benefits counseling for residents 60 and older.

Disposal, recycling and large items

What donation centers cannot take usually goes here. In apartment buildings, ask the super where and when large items can go out before you set anything on the curb.

  • DSNY large items

    The Department of Sanitation no longer takes appointments for most large items. Up to six items can go out on the right collection day; the page explains which day.

  • DSNY furniture, mattresses and rugs

    Mattresses and box springs must be sealed in a plastic bag, or you can be fined. Rugs should be rolled and tied.

  • DSNY refrigerator and air conditioner removal

    Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners still need a free removal appointment, made online or through 311.

  • DSNY SAFE Disposal Events

    Drop-off events in each borough for paint, household chemicals, medications and electronics. New York City residents only.

  • DSNY electronics disposal

    Electronics cannot legally go out with the trash. Lists drop-off sites, take-back programs and ecycleNYC collection for buildings with 10 or more units.
